It comes as no surprise to most that there’s a sustained pay gap between men and women in the American work force, but today we look beyond the gap between just men and women and instead recognize how race and ethnicity impacts this divide.

These sectors also accounted for 47% of jobs held by women in February, compared with 28% for men, exposing women to a higher risk of unemployment in recent months.
Furthermore, the share of Latina women earning at or below minimum wage is actually increasing, tripling from 2007 to 2012, and contributing to an overall poverty rate of 27.9% —close to three timesthat of non-Latina white women. Currently, there are limited resources for Latina immigrants in the United States. The resulting delay in the treatment of breast cancer in Hispanic/Latina women affects the prognosis. With time, tumors become larger and are more likely to spread to other areas of the body, requiring more extensive treatment and making them more difficult to eradicate. Breast cancer self-examination, which can detect lumps and breast changes, is obviously something everyone can do.

Hispanic women were also 30 percent less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women. Hispanic American men and women generally have lower cancer rates than the non-Hispanic white population. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 32.2 percent of Latina women work in the service sector, compared with only 20 percent of white women, and service workers are almost 20 percent less likely to have either paid sick leave or retirement benefits. Latina-owned businesses are concentrated in the industries of health care at 20 percent, administrative services at 18 percent, retail at 10 percent, professional at 9 percent, and real estate at 6 percent.
